Do not make this recipe! This recipe is so highly addictive that you may need apple crisp rehab after you bake it. I can imagine you, led away in a straight jacket, whimpering, the memory of that final delicious crumb haunting your memory. This is the hard stuff, folks. Except the recipe itself - it’s easy. Too easy.

I like sweets. I am not opposed to baked goods. But normally, I’m happy with a small portion for dessert. Once my sweet tooth is satisfied, I don’t find myself dwelling on a desire for more. But after tasting this incredible dessert, it was all I could think about. I found myself drawn to the kitchen like a magnet draws metal, so I could scoop out “one more tiny bite”, over and over again. It was a relentless obsession that had me in thrall until my equally obsessed husband and I had eaten it all.


It began when I asked my husband to get me some fruit from the grocery store. He returned with berries, grapes, and a bag full of small red delicious apples.

I decided to make something with the apples and happened upon this recipe by Karina, on a web-site called Café Delites. She actually calls it an apple crumble. No matter, it’s still addictive no matter what you call it.

There are only two things about this recipe that are hard; peeling, coring, and slicing 10 apples and staying away from the crack after you’ve made it. Thankfully, the apple prep work is onerous enough that I have not made the recipe a second time. My sweet husband helped me with the prep, so it really wasn’t that bad.

Ingredients

Filling:

8 to 10 apples, cored, peeled and thinly sliced

¼ cup white sugar

2 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed

1 tablespoon all purpose flour

¾ tsp. cinnamon

¼ cup water

Topping:

1 ¼ cup oats

1 ¼ cup all-purpose flour

¾ cup light brown sugar, packed

¼ cup white granulated sugar

1 tsp. ground cinnamon

½ tsp. salt

¼ tsp. baking powder

¾ cups unsalted melted butter

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Arrange the apple slices in a 9” x 13”baking dish. Add the sugars, flour and cinnamon. Pour in the water and mix until the apples are evenly coated.

Combine the topping ingredients in a bowl. Mix well until the butter has soaked through the dry ingredients, about one minute. It’s fun to mush this all around with your hands. Sprinkle evenly over the apples.

Bake in a preheated oven for 40 – 50 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp.

You may top your portion with ice cream, but if you do, you will require a longer stay at apple crack rehab.
